A new version of the legendary Nokia 3310 phone was unveiled at the 2017 Mobile World Congress on Feb 27.

Nokia was a leading mobile brand, prior to current giants like Apple and Android. It sold 126 million devices of its original Nokia 3310 version after the initial release in 2000. This specific model is popular for its durability and has inspired many memes and quotes in social media.

This revamped version is also named Nokia 3310 and will be sold by the Finnish company, HMD Global that acquired Nokia design rights and its rights to use the Nokia brand name on mobile phones and tablets worldwide until 2024.

The new Nokia 3310 has been introduced as a feature phone along with three other new smartphones: Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6.

The new Nokia phone comes with single and dual SIM capacity. It runs on Nokia Series 30+ OS which was used on a dozen previous Nokia phones. It is supported by 2G connectivity and a 2MP rear camera. This time, the new Nokia phone will be released in four colours: Warm Red, Dark Blue, Yellow and Grey.

The new Nokia 3310 is creating a lot of nostalgia with its design which is quite similar to the original device, but a lot more lighter, thinner and a smaller body with a 2.4-inch QVGA display. It features an FM radio, an MP3 player and Opera Mini for web browsing, just like most Nokia phones did a decade ago. A new version of the iconic ‘Snake’ game also adds to everyone’s excitement.

After HMD Global took over Nokia, this is its first mobile launch in 2017. This is a crucial launch for the company too, as it will decide if the famous mobile brand will regain its glory or not. Therefore, re-creating a device that is highly adored is a clever marketing tactic. As expected, all Nokia Android devices unveiled at MWC are receiving a great deal of media attention because of the new Nokia 3310. It is expected that many will purchase the device for its sentimental value. We hope that Nokia will also survive its comeback, just as it was speculated for the BlackBerry Mercury.

The new Nokia 3310 is ready to hit the international market in the second quarter of this year and is expected to be priced at $52 (approximately AED 193).

It is creating a lot of controversy with its 2G connectivity as the majority of service providers do not cater to it. All said and done, we’ve always had a soft spot for Nokia and hopefully this new version will only strengthen it further.
